Where to Stay in Koh Phangan: Hin Kong, Srithanu & the West Coast
A quiet corner of the island that most visitors overlook.
Most people arrive in Koh Phangan thinking about Haad Rin — the beach, the party, the full moon. They leave wondering why they didn't stay on the west coast instead.
Hin Kong and Srithanu sit on the quieter side of the island, facing the sunset and the Gulf of Thailand. The beaches here are calmer, the roads are slower, and the people who end up staying tend to extend their trips without quite meaning to.
Why the west coast?
The geography of Koh Phangan means the east coast catches the wind and waves during certain seasons, while the west stays sheltered. Hin Kong Beach in particular is a long, gentle stretch — shallow enough to walk far out at low tide, consistently calm, and genuinely quiet even during high season.
Srithanu, just a kilometre or two north, has become a small hub for longer-stay visitors. There are good cafés, yoga spaces, a few restaurants that know what they're doing, and the kind of local rhythm that doesn't accelerate on weekends. It doesn't feel like a resort area. It feels like a village that happens to be on a beautiful island.
Hin Kong specifically
Hin Kong is where Caya Beach by Satori is located. It's one of the few genuinely beachfront properties on this stretch — meaning your room is steps from the water, not a walk down a path through someone else's garden.
The beach itself sees almost no tourist traffic during the day. In the evenings, local families arrive, small fires appear, and the whole scene slows to a pace that's hard to find on more developed islands in Thailand.
Srithanu: pool villas and jungle gardens
If you prefer privacy over beach access, Srithanu is where the private pool villa experience tends to be strongest on the island. The jungle canopy is thick here — villas feel genuinely enclosed, pools feel private, and mornings sound like birds rather than scooters.
Barefoot Villas by Satori is in Srithanu, about a five-minute drive from the beach. Ten separate pool villas, each on its own plot. The layout means you never feel like you're in a hotel — more like you've borrowed someone's very well-designed house for a week.
Practical notes
The west coast is best accessed from the Thong Sala ferry pier (15–20 minutes by taxi). Scooter rental is available in Srithanu and gives you easy access to the rest of the island. The sunset from the beach is genuinely worth being present for — it's one of the better ones in the Gulf.
